In the 2025/2026 school year, the Municipality of Miercurea Ciuc (Romania) launched a comprehensive FITSZEREDA Health Promotion Program, involving 14 schools in the city, nearly six thousand students, and around thirty physical education teachers. The initiative aims to assess students’ fitness levels, physical activity, and spinal health, and, based on the results, design local health promotion interventions.
During the first, pilot year, students’ health-related physical fitness will be assessed within the scientific and pedagogical framework provided by the Hungarian NETFIT® fitness monitoring system, and the international FITBACK fitness assessment model. Alongside the municipality, the project is supported by the Harghita County School Inspectorate, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, and the HUngarian University of Sports Science.
Dr. Tamás Csányi (Hungarian University of Sports Science, European Physical Education Association), the program’s scientific advisor, stated that this initiative provides a unique opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the health status and lifestyle habits of the younger generation at the community level. He added that through the local training of physical education teachers, another important goal is to ensure the proper use of fitness assessments in school physical education, thereby contributing to the development of students’ physical literacy.
