DAFIS – Spanish best practice

DAFIS (Datos Actividad física Saludable) is a program for the assessment of the physical fitness throughout population life (children, adolescents, adults, and elderly people) in Galicia region, north-west of Spain.

  • DAFIS is comprised by two main parts: (1) Evaluation tests: They are designed for all the population included in a given age range established by the World Health Organisation (WHO): 5-17 years; 18-64 years and >64 years. (2) Web based tool: A web was created adhoc for the measurement recording. It also offers the option of performing comparisons regarding the reference values. 
  • DAFIS program allows to assess the health-related physical fitness, which is a content of the galician physical education (PE) curriculum in elementary, secondary, and high school.  
  • It provides PE teachers and education centres a platform for recording, monitoring, and categorise the physical fitness of children and adolescents. 
  • A total of 28.848 evaluations were performed to date, involving 16.939 students and 141 education centres.  
  • In addition, 14 training courses were held, a total of 279 teachers were trained and 7 reports are made available to the different stakeholders (students, families, centres, teachers, and healthcare professionals).

  • DAFIS provides healthcare professionals access to the children and adolescents information. The BMI, waist circumference and cardiovascular fitness are the principal control indices monitoring by teachers and healthcare professionals.
