National Fitness Monitoring System - Best Practices in Serbia

The main objectives of the national fitness monitoring system in Serbia are: a) to enable regular testing of all schoolchildren (during regular physical education lessons) using systematized and standardized tests; b) provide age- and gender-specific feedback based on national percentile values; c) enable monitoring of individual and collective changes in fitness levels during the growth and development of children; d) provide recommendations to students and their parents on how to maintain or improve the level of physical fitness; e) educate students and their parents about the importance of physical activity throughout life and the value of a healthy lifestyle.

In brief

Since 2017, the system has been implemented regularly by the physical education and health program in primary schools and since the year 2019, in secondary schools in Serbia. All students aged 9 to 19 are tested once or twice a year. The measurements are carried out according to a standardized protocol and are integrated into regular physical education lessons (3x45 min). The responsible organization is the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education of the University of Belgrade which developed the system and is currently working on the development of the software. After the assessment, all students receive a personal report including the absolute (values obtained) and relative (percentiles) results, the interpretation of the results obtained and the necessary recommendations.
